🚀 Why I’m Thinking About 2030 Today

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the future of work, specifically, the skills I’ll need to stay relevant and adaptable by 2030. With AI advancing, industries shifting, and job descriptions evolving faster than ever, it’s clear that what got me here won’t get me there.

So when I came across the World Economic Forum’s latest Future of Jobs Survey, I paid close attention. It maps out what employers believe will be the most essential core skills by 2030—and let me tell you, it’s not just about tech.

🔍 What I Learned from the 2030 Skills Forecast

1. Tech-Driven, But Deeply Human

The top skill? AI and Big Data. No surprise there. I’ve already started brushing up on AI tools—not to become a data scientist, but to understand how AI can support my work and decision-making.

But it wasn’t just technical skills that stood out. Skills like resilience, analytical thinking, and creative problem-solving were also front and center. In other words, we’re going to need to pair machine fluency with uniquely human strengths.

2. Self-Leadership is the New Leadership

I was especially encouraged to see curiosity, lifelong learning, and self-awareness climbing the ranks. These are personal growth habits I’ve tried to cultivate over the years—and now they’re becoming professional must-haves. The ability to stay motivated and adapt without waiting for permission is what will set us apart.

3. Emerging Areas I’m Watching Closely

A few surprises showed up under the “emerging skills” category—like environmental stewardship, design and user experience, and networks and cybersecurity. These aren’t core for me now, but I’m keeping an eye on them. The skills we invest in today can quietly become tomorrow’s differentiators.

4. What’s Losing Steam

Interestingly, skills like manual dexterity, basic math, and even reading and writing are declining in importance across many fields, at least according to employers. That doesn’t mean they’re irrelevant, but it does signal a shift in how much is being automated or augmented by tech.

📌 What I’m Doing About It

  • I’m prioritizing learning about AI tools that apply directly to my field.
  • I’m doubling down on soft skills—especially listening, collaboration, and creative thinking.
  • I’ve made a habit of monthly skill audits: What am I good at? What’s getting rusty? What’s next?

🙌 Final Thought

This isn’t about chasing every trend. It’s about making intentional bets on skills that align with where the world—and my career—are heading. The future is full of change, but it’s also full of opportunity for those ready to evolve.👉 What’s one skill you’re working on for the future?
